The Back Story

The Lidl Net Zero Energy Store in Maynooth has been designed as a next-generation retail environment, setting a new benchmark for sustainable construction and energy efficiency within Ireland. As the country’s first Net Zero Energy supermarket, the development integrates advanced technologies and innovative construction methods to significantly reduce both operational energy use and embodied carbon.

Key features of the store include a 575 kWp rooftop solar PV system – approximately 2.5 times larger than a standard store – alongside a 215 kWh on-site battery storage system capable of powering the building for up to six hours. The project also incorporates EV charging infrastructure, sustainable transport provisions, biodiversity-focused landscaping, green walls, and rainwater harvesting systems, all contributing to its achievement of a BREEAM Outstanding rating – the highest possible standard in sustainable building.

Demesne Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Ltd was appointed to deliver the full electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and air conditioning installation, alongside part design responsibility and full BIM modelling, ensuring accurate coordination and efficient delivery across all aspects of the development.

commitment to quality and safety

Demesne Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Ltd approached this project with a strong emphasis on coordination, technical precision, and sustainable engineering practices. The scope of works covered the complete mechanical and electrical installation, including power distribution, lighting systems, HVAC infrastructure, and air conditioning systems – all designed to support the store’s Net Zero Energy performance.

Part design responsibility and full BIM modelling played a key role in the successful delivery of the project, enabling seamless integration across all disciplines and ensuring a highly coordinated installation process. Given the complexity and innovation involved, close collaboration with Lidl Ireland and the wider project team was essential to align with both sustainability objectives and programme requirements.

Extensive testing and commissioning were carried out to verify system performance, efficiency, and compliance with all relevant standards. Throughout the project, Demesne maintained its commitment to quality workmanship, health and safety, and delivering a robust, future-proof installation that supports long-term operational excellence.

In conclusion, the Lidl Net Zero Energy Store in Maynooth stands as a flagship project for Demesne Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Ltd, demonstrating the company’s ability to deliver complex, sustainability-driven developments to the highest standards. This project highlights what can be achieved when engineering expertise, innovation, and environmental responsibility come together.
